Learning from 400 years of History

Did you know…?

Where prisons have been converted to alternative uses they provide a valuable educational resource. For example, the Galleries of Justice Museum in Nottingham provides hands-on learning experiences, bringing the subjects of History and Citizenship to life.

Their tours include the old Gaol and HM Prison Service Collection to learn about Crime and Punishment throughout the ages.

Shepton Mallet prison has 400 years of history to learn from.

We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to provide a museum that Shepton Mallet, Mendip and Somerset can be proud of.

To achieve this we need to safeguard as much as the prison’s heritage assets as possible. We also need to capture real life stories from those who worked at the prison and were detained there.

Please contact MDC with your views about the prison’s redevelopment and let us know if you would like to share your own stories for future generations.
