Bodmin Jail

Did you know…?

There is nothing new about the idea of a prison as a tourist destination. In April 1840 the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway ran a day trip from Wadebridge – a visit to Bodmin Jail. James and William Lightfoot were to be hanged for the murder of a local man. A crowd of 20,000 gathered to watch the execution.

Today tourists still flock to Bodmin Jail, but now it is to experience the ghost walks or hear ‘Tales from the Jail’.
